Pray for Nepal

Nepal is facing a devastating catastrophe after powerful flash floods and landslides tore through communities along the Nepal–Tibet border. The disaster began on August 26 after a massive ice-and-rock avalanche blocked a tributary, creating a natural dam that later released a destructive wall of water and debris downstream.

The destruction has been enormous. Homes, roads, bridges, markets, hydropower facilities and other vital infrastructure have been swept away or buried beneath mud and debris. Entire sections of mountain communities have been left isolated, while the damage has also disrupted an important trade and travel route between Nepal and Tibet.

The human toll continues to rise as rescue teams search through devastated areas. Reports on August 27 put the number of people killed in Nepal and Tibet at well over 300, with more than a thousand still missing. Among those unaccounted for are local residents, workers, pilgrims and tourists from several countries.

Rescue operations are underway, with Nepalese authorities deploying the army, police, helicopters and search teams to reach survivors. But destroyed roads, unstable slopes and continuing bad weather are making the search extremely difficult. Families are waiting anxiously for news of loved ones who remain missing.

Scientists are investigating the exact chain of events, with evidence pointing toward a major glacier or ice-and-rock collapse high in the Himalayas. Experts have also warned that rising temperatures and increasing glacier instability may be contributing to the growing danger of such catastrophic events in the region.

Our hearts are with Nepal and everyone affected by this unimaginable tragedy. We pray for those who lost their lives, those still missing, the families waiting for answers, and the rescuers risking everything to save others.

Stay safe. Stay strong. Nepal will heal, rebuild and rise again.
